Mounting & balance of system

EN 50618 cable in 4 and 6 sq mm. Structures rated for 150 kmph wind.

What to check

Structure rated for the site

Galvanised or aluminium, wind-rated for your roof. "MS structure" on a quote is not a specification.

Protection that actually protects

Surge protection, over-current protection, and a proper earthing pit. It stops a fault becoming a fire.

Safe maintenance access

An array nobody can safely reach is an array nobody cleans. Dirt costs about a tenth of your output.

What we supply

A galvanised ground-mounted module structure installed in rows
Fine Line Engineers logo

Mounting structures

Ground-mounted, flat-roof, pitched-roof and pole-mounted structures. Poles, beams and purlins in pre-galvanised or hot-dip galvanised MS; aluminium for tiled and metal roofs. This is the line a discounted quote usually cuts, and the one that fails first.

Wind load rating
150 kmph
Tilt range
10° to 40°
Materials
Pre-galvanised MS, hot-dip galvanised MS, aluminium
Applications
Ground, flat roof, pitched roof, pole mounted
A DC distribution box rated to 1.5 kV, showing isolators and fusing

DC distribution boxes (DCDB)

Interconnect the module array to the inverter, configured to the series-parallel layout of the specific array. Customised for the site rather than bought off a shelf.

DC compatibility
600 V to 1500 V
Inputs
1 to 24
Enclosure
IP65 / IP66 polycarbonate or GRP
Rating
Outdoor, flame-retardant, impact rated
An AC distribution box with MCBs and surge protection, open for inspection

AC distribution boxes (ACDB) & LT panels

Combine inverter outputs into the main service or load panel, with the over-current and surge protection that stops a fault becoming a fire.

Enclosure
IP65 / IP66 polycarbonate or metal
Protection
MCB / MCCB over-current and short circuit
Surge protection
AC surge protection devices (SPDs)
Connections
Through cable glands

String monitoring combiner box (SMCB)

A combiner box that also monitors each string individually, so a failing string is diagnosable rather than merely suspected. Worth it on any array large enough that walking it is impractical.

String monitoring
1 to 24 strings, Hall-effect current sensors
Voltage monitoring
0 to 1500 V DC
Temperature
Optional in-box sensor
Communications
MODBUS RS485 to SCADA
Protection
SPDs on communication lines

Solar DC cable

TUV-certified DC cable to EN 50618:2014. Tinned flexible copper with halogen-free, UV-resistant, flame-retardant sheathing — it spends 25 years on a roof in the sun.

Certification
TUV, EN 50618:2014
Sizes
4 sq mm and 6 sq mm (others on request)
Conductor
Annealed tinned flexible copper
Sheathing
Halogen-free, UV resistant, flame retardant
Temperature range
−40 °C to 120 °C
A copper-bonded earthing kit with rods, chemical backfill and a lightning arrestor

Earthing & lightning protection

Copper-bonded earth rods with chemical backfill, and multi-spike lightning arrestors. Invisible on a quotation and decisive in a storm.

Earth rods
Copper bonded, 1 m to 3 m
Chemical backfill
10 kg to 25 kg bags
Lightning arrestor
Copper bonded 1 m, multi-spike
Solar MC4 Connectors

MC4 connectors

Single-contact weatherproof connectors for module interconnection — the standard, and the only thing that should be used.

Type
Single contact, weatherproof
Certification
TUV, EN 50521:2008
A yellow FRP walkway laid across an industrial roof between solar arrays

FRP walkways & handrails

Safe maintenance access across an industrial array. An array nobody can safely reach is an array nobody cleans, and a dirty array quietly loses you a tenth of its generation.

Material
Fibre-reinforced polymer (FRP)
Application
Industrial and commercial rooftop access
Corrosion
Chemical and corrosion resistant
Weight
Low weight
Insulation
Electrically and thermally insulated
Surface
Anti-skid
